What is BREEAM?
BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method and is the world’s leading environmental assessment method.
It was established in 1990 and is now a widely recognised standard for the environmental performance of a building.
It works on a points system to achieve a specific rating.
There are 10 sections within the assessment method.

All large public buildings require the assessment to be undertaken and many local governments require BREEAM within their planning conditions for other types of non-domestic buildings.
Most planning authorities require a rating of Very Good or Excellent.
Different building types require different ways to achieve a BREEAM rating, such as shell and core developments or small buildings.
Credits are available in each section with different weightings.
Some credits are mandatory (minimum standards) and some are ‘tradable’ which enables good scope to gain the points required for the rating required.
